This is a common question for many people and, when I thought about it, was a question for me in the first third of my life.
For some, it’s finding happiness (according to the Dalai Lama). For others it’s finding a way to be successful. For others it’s a desire to serve. And, I’m sure there are plenty more if people truly think about the question, ‘Why am I here?’
For a man who is a husband and father and has chosen to follow Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, the purpose of life becomes much clearer and in some ways more simple – not easier, but more simple.
As a Christian man, husband and father, I see clearly now my purpose in life is found in these priorities:
- My chief purpose, my chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. (Westminster Catechism) This purpose began when I accepted Jesus as my Savior and Lord and began my relationship with my Creator.
- Following God’s command, my second purpose is to love Betty as Christ loved the church and gave his life up for her.
- My third purpose is to be a role model for my sons and their families. My role as a parent (i.e, teach, correct, discipline) ended when they became adults.
- My fourth purpose is to love my neighbors as I love myself and I do this through our ministry at our church.
Everything else in my life is subservient to these four purposes God has given me. For me, it has simplified my life and has helped me to be content with who I am and why I’m here.
