Our New Mexico cultures include a significant portion of American Indians. One of our neatest events is the Gathering of Nations, a coming together of Indian tribes from all over the country and Mexico. The first thing you notice is the overwhelming amount of color in their dance outfits, including incredible beading throughout.
The younger generation is also included.
Indian women participate in their own dances and costumes.
Some are more subtle, but equally beautiful.
Feathers are an important part of every costume. At one powwow years ago, the dancing was stopped when an eagle feather fell off a dancer’s outfit. A special ceremony was held before it was returned to it’s owner.
They are a proud people doing all they can to continue their culture and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.
