St. Louis Recap

We were in St. Louis last weekend to visit Chris and Deborah in their new home. They were great hosts. They gave us several tours of the area, including seeing effects of the recent tornado last May that was only a few miles from them. We were also treated to just a few of the great restaurants that are close to where they live. St. Louis has an amazing number of unique restaurants.
We’ll start with a couple of pictures of some nice houses that suffered tornado damage. In a few of the lower income areas the damage was much worse. The white on the roof is actually a cover because of damage to the roof.

This house not only suffered roof damage, but you can see plywood over a couple of windows and the remains of a large tree that was blown down. Many trees were lost.

They took us to visit Washington University where Deborah works (Chris works from home). It’s an impressive place with historical buildings, a major medical college, and more.

We visited the history museum with a statue of St. Louis in the front.

As we drove around town, we visited the Arch which memorializes St. Louis as the site where the explorers of the West started their adventures.

This statue, close to the Arch, symbolizes the return of Lewis and Clark after their journey to explore the West.

On Saturday night, we were treated to a performance of ‘Evita’ at the Muny. It’s an open air performance center that attracts major performances by professional artists. It is ranked with many of the best performance venues in the country. It was a great performance on a beautiful night. This is a picture of us taken in Forest Park as we walked to the Muny to see ‘Evita.’

This is a pre-performance picture as pictures and videos are not allowed during the performance.

Finally, they took us to just a few of the great restaurants in their area, starting with Zias on the Hill, an Italian restaurant with a unique, sweet Italian dressing. Betty’s sister, Margie, introduced us to this dressing years ago and we love it. It was fun to eat at the restaurant from which it came.

For one lunch we went to Steve’s Hot Dogs and, as a hot dog lover, it was great.

For dinner one night, we went to Blueberry Hill, a unique restaurant that first opened in 1972. It has become a destination for many artists and actors and Chuck Berry played a set on their stage. A statue across the street is there to commemorate his performance at Blueberry Hill.

The restaurant has collected and displays an incredible collection of music and pop culture items.

Finally, Chris and Deborah took us to a Cajun restaurant, Evangelines, for a Sunday brunch. It’s known for it’s jazz music and a group played while we were there.
It was a great visit. Chris and Deborah were wonderful hosts and shared parts of their new life in St. Louis.
