Another Getting Old Issue

I’ve been having some lower back pain over the past week or so and it’s gotten worse over the past three days. So, Betty took me to our doctor and her diagnosis is lumbar spinal stenosis which is a fancy medical term for arthritis.

She said it is a common ailment that affects older folks and being 80, almost 81, I guess I’m an older folk.

The initial treatment is an anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the infection and Gabapentin to deal with the nerve issues, along with traditional things such as applying cold and heat. She ordered an MRI to confirm her diagnosis, but that will probably be three weeks or more.

I can’t bend down to pick up anything on the floor, but standing does not hurt that much so I can still do some of the things around the house. Betty, bless her heart, is picking up all the things I can’t do.

Despite what I’m dealing with, it’s minor compared to others (looking at you Molly) who are dealing with much more pain in their lives.

Just dealing with it through God’s grace and Betty’s loving help.

  1. Most days I still prefer getting older to the alternative! Betty’s not as tall as you so the floor is closer. You take care of each other.

  2. i like the fact that you posted, but I do not like that you are in pain. I have cervical spondylosis (neck) and that is painful enough! Please be gentle with yourself, Dan. Your pain is your own and comparing it to others does not help, though you are kind in your thoughts, I pray the steroids knock down the inflammation. Ice seems to help me more than heat, but you will discover what works best for you. Welcome to the world with gabapentin! I will be lifting you in prayer, my friend .

  4. Vera, Betty has had nerve issues in her side for many years. The Gabapentin has definitely helped her. Our doctor originally said that taking it would not be a problem as there were no significant side effects. It has even helped her sleep.
